Interesting facts about the current USA S13 market
I looked at 112 S13s that are listed for sale all across the USA. I found many desperate projects, a couple of real gems and a lot of sadness. These are some of the most interesting statistics and facts that I found!
In the USA 29,5% if the S13s for sale are in running and driving condition but they require work to make them look nice and reliable. For a project car, these are usually a great place to start and are often better valuable than a full-on project car that needs a bit of everything.
With 25% of all the ads we found, project cars represent the next biggest category. These cars require significant investment to get them back on the road. They are often rusty, incomplete, and non-running.
If you are after a very clean OEM example, you might have trouble finding one. Only 1.8% of all the ads we found were in excellent condition. But if you don’t mind some modification the pool gets slightly larger by 6,2%.
In the USA people also love to modify their S13s. 19,6% of the cars we found were heavily modified. We are talking about widebody kits, cut arches, and engine swaps. 1.8% of all the cars found were designated racecars.
The most popular listing platforms by far are Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist.
Out of all S13s the 63,4% were hatchbacks, 29.5% of them were coupes, 4,5% were convertibles, 1,8% were JDM Silvias and only one 180SX was found making up 0,9% of our list.
Interesting facts about the current European S13 market
These average prices for an S13 europe heavily depends on the condition of the car. Most cars for sale are in excellent condition, either really good drivers with slight mods or pristine OEM examples. For this survey we found 49 S13’s for sale accross europe on various different car sales websites.
Out of all cars the majority were in really nice condition. 22,5% of all the cars were in pristine or very near pristine OEM condition, with no visible rust and fantastic looking interiors. It is clear that people are starting to restore these cars and that restored S13s are starting to represent a large portion of the market.
If you want a nice running driving example you are in luck. 22,5% of all the cars we found where in nice running and driving condition, but needed a little bit of love to make them perfect. In my opinion these are the most fun cars to buy! You can drive them immediately and don’t have to spend a ton of cash upfront just to get it in driveable condition.
10,2% of all the cars we found were heavily modified. We are talking widebody kits and big engine swaps. 8,2% of all the cars I found were straight up racecars.
The amount of project cars seems lower than in years before. 10,2% of all the S13s found were project cars that required a serious amount of time and money to get running. We are mostly talking about rust or a load of missing parts. 2,1% of all the cars were bare shells without a drivetrain.
Conclusions on S13 prices
There is a big difference between the USA and EU markets. Finding a very nice or pristine example is not easy in the USA, whereas in the EU there is far more choice for cars in good condition. If you want a running and driving S13 or a project there is plenty of choice in the USA.
For people who like to add their personal touch and want to get their hands a little dirty, a running and driving example is usually the best way to go. You can expect to pay around $2.000 to $3.000 more for a runner compared to a project but this is often worth the cost! Don’t forget to check out the S13 buyers guide so you don’t end up buying a lemon
Do keep your eyes out for a good and easy project car though! I found some absolute gems for sale. Imagine a $6.000 S13 that is completely OEM, has no rust but just hasn’t run in 8 years and needs some TLC. To me, this sounds like an absolute bargain!
Generally speaking, the prices in the USA are significantly lower than in the EU. Bare shells go for double the price in the EU, project cars are much rarer, and a running and driving car on average costs around $6.000 more in the EU. The average price of a super nice to pristine condition S13 is up to $17.000 more in the EU!
Keep in mind that these are just asking prices. Perhaps Americans are more realistic in asking prices and Europeans are more likely to bargain. Nonetheless, the differences are significant.
